The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has entered into a strategic partnership with Reliance Jio to deploy a telecom-based safety alert system across the National Highway network. The initiative aims to significantly enhance road safety, reduce accidents and improve the overall commuting experience for millions of travellers.
Real-Time Alerts for Highway Users
Using Jio’s widespread 4G and 5G network, commuters will receive advance warnings on their mobile phones as they approach accident-prone zones, fog-affected stretches, stray-cattle areas, emergency diversions and other risk points.
The alerts will be delivered through SMS, WhatsApp and high-priority voice calls, ensuring maximum visibility and timely action from travellers.
Seamless Integration with NHAI Digital Systems
The system will be integrated gradually with NHAI’s existing digital platforms, including:
Rajmargyatra mobile application
Emergency helpline 1033
This integration will help build a more responsive, technology-driven highway management ecosystem.
No Additional Roadside Hardware Needed
A key advantage of this initiative is its reliance on existing telecom infrastructure, allowing quick, nationwide deployment without the need for new on-ground equipment. All Jio users travelling on or near National Highways will automatically benefit from real-time alerts.
Statements from NHAI and Reliance Jio
NHAI Chairman Shri Santosh Kumar Yadav said that the initiative is a major step forward in offering timely and reliable information to commuters, enabling safer driving decisions and proactive speed management.
Mr. Jyotindra Thacker, President of Reliance Jio, highlighted that the project leverages Jio’s extensive network to provide high-scale, real-time safety communication, making highway travel more predictable and informed.
Pilot Deployment and Expansion
The initial pilot will test risk-zone mapping, alert thresholds and communication efficiency under select NHAI regional offices. The system will be fully compliant with regulatory and data-protection norms.
NHAI also plans to extend similar collaborations with other telecom operators, ensuring uniform and nationwide road-safety enhancement.
A Step Toward Safer, Smarter Highways
By harnessing real-time digital alerts, robust telecom reach and NHAI’s expanding digital ecosystem, the initiative aims to reduce preventable accidents, boost commuter awareness and create a safer, smarter and more efficient National Highway experience for the country.
