Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), one of India’s largest public sector steel producers and a Maharatna company, has once again demonstrated its pivotal role in nation-building. The company supplied nearly 15,000 metric tons of high-quality steel for the 51-kilometer Bairabi–Sairang railway line in Mizoram. This historic project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025, marking a significant step in improving railway connectivity in Northeast India.

Steel Contribution for the Project
For the Bairabi–Sairang Railway Project, SAIL supplied:

  • 10,000 metric tons of R-260 Prime Rails from its flagship Bhilai Steel Plant.

  • 5,000 metric tons of plates, TMT bars, and structural steel from multiple plants including Bokaro, Rourkela, Durgapur, Bhilai, and Burnpur.

This supply ensured that the project met the highest safety and durability standards, providing the essential strength for a railway line that will serve as a lifeline for Mizoram and the broader Northeast region.

Boosting Connectivity in the Northeast
The Bairabi–Sairang railway project reflects India’s continued focus on connecting remote regions through modern infrastructure. Enhanced railway access in Mizoram will not only facilitate smoother passenger travel but also accelerate the transport of goods, thus boosting trade, economic growth, and regional integration.

SAIL’s Role in National Infrastructure Development
SAIL’s contribution to the Bairabi–Sairang project is part of its larger legacy in powering landmark infrastructure projects across India. The company has been a key steel supplier to iconic initiatives such as:

  • The Chenab Railway Bridge

  • The Jiribam–Tupul–Imphal Broad Gauge Project

  • The Atal Tunnel (Rohtang)

  • The Bandra–Worli Sea Link

  • The Dhola Sadiya and Bogibeel bridges

By consistently providing high-quality steel for mega projects, SAIL reinforces its status as a reliable partner in nation-building and infrastructure expansion.

Future Outlook
SAIL continues to prioritize the Northeast region by supplying steel for critical sectors including power, railways, hydroelectric projects, and border connectivity. With projects like Bairabi–Sairang, the company is strengthening India’s efforts to create a unified, well-connected infrastructure network across challenging terrains.
