In a historic milestone for tribal welfare and last-mile service delivery, Dr. Rashmi Choudhary, Assistant Commissioner, National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS), New Delhi, inaugurated the first health care centre in the remote Paatalkot valley of Chhindwara district, Madhya Pradesh. The inauguration on 27th September 2025 marks a transformative step in providing essential healthcare to the Gond and Bharia tribes, classified as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).

Paatalkot: From Isolation to Development
Nestled deep in the Tamia block, Paatalkot is a mystical valley comprising 12 scattered villages with nearly 4,000 residents. For decades, the valley’s challenging terrain forced villagers to walk long distances along steep trails for basic healthcare, education, and livelihood needs. While development in roads, electricity, water supply, and education had reached Paatalkot under various government schemes, healthcare remained an unmet necessity.

Government Initiatives Transforming the Valley
Central government initiatives have gradually changed the face of Paatalkot:

  • Pradhan Mantri Janman Yojana has extended infrastructure support.

  • Dharti Abba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan improved basic amenities such as drinking water, housing, and electricity.

  • Aadi Karmayogi Abhiyan focused on holistic tribal empowerment, bringing roads, schools, and livelihood opportunities.

Children from the valley now study at the Eklavya Model Residential School in Tamia, while homestay projects in Chimtipur have created new avenues for tourism-based income.

Healthcare Milestone Achieved
During her visit to Sindhouli and Rated villages, Dr. Choudhary interacted with community members who highlighted concerns over the non-functional Ayushman Arogya Kendra, despite the building being ready. Responding promptly, she directed health officials to operationalize the centre immediately. By evening, the health centre was inaugurated and opened to the public, ensuring access to medical staff and essential facilities.

Voices from the Community
“This is a historic day for Paatalkot. For the first time, our people will not have to walk miles for basic medical needs,” said a villager from Sindhouli. Health authorities have confirmed that services, staff, and medicines are now in place to serve the tribal community effectively.

Monitoring and Support by NESTS
Shri Ajeet Srivastava, Commissioner, NESTS and State Prabhari Officer for Madhya Pradesh, has been actively overseeing the progress of the Aadi Karmayogi Abhiyan. His continuous monitoring and guidance have ensured that developmental initiatives reach Paatalkot’s most remote corners.

Conclusion
The inauguration of the first health centre in Paatalkot stands as a symbol of India’s commitment to tribal empowerment, inclusive growth, and last-mile delivery of services. By bridging healthcare gaps, this development not only improves the quality of life but also strengthens the journey of Paatalkot from isolation to empowerment.
