NESTS Organises Three-Day “GI Tagged Tribal Art Workshop & Exhibition – Cultural Extravaganza” in New Delhi

The National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS), under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, has launched a vibrant three-day event titled GI Tagged Tribal Art Workshop & Exhibition – Cultural Extravaganza in New Delhi. The initiative, being held from 24–26 November 2025, showcases India’s diverse Geographical Indication (GI)-recognised tribal art traditions and promotes culturally-rooted skill development among tribal youth. A total of 139 students from Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) across India are participating, along with 34 art and music teachers and 10 master artisans, making the event a significant national celebration of heritage and creativity.

Grand Inaugural Ceremony
The event began with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony and a welcome address by Shri Vipin Kumar, Joint Commissioner (Admin), NESTS. A special address was delivered by Prof. Anil Kumar, HoD, Janapada Sampada, IGNCA, emphasising the civilizational value and cultural depth of tribal art. Subsequent remarks were shared by Shri Bipin Raturi, Joint Commissioner (Civil), NESTS, and Shri Prashant Meena, Additional Commissioner, NESTS. The workshop was formally inaugurated by Shri Ajeet Kumar Srivastava, Commissioner, NESTS, followed by a vote of thanks from Dr. Rashmi Chaudhary, Assistant Commissioner (Academic), NESTS.

Cultural Performances by Tribal Students
The inaugural day featured dynamic cultural performances by EMRS students representing diverse indigenous traditions, including:
Dhemsa Dance – Odisha
Jaunsari Dance – Uttarakhand
Mizo Folk Dance – Mizoram
Folk Vocal Solo – Dadra & Nagar Haveli
Patriotic Song – Madhya Pradesh

These performances portrayed the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat, celebrating unity through cultural diversity.

Hands-On Training in GI-Recognised Art Forms
Renowned GI expert Ms. Shweta Menon (Truly Tribal) conducted a live session explaining the significance and global demand for GI-certified traditional artworks. Students are receiving expert-led training in revered art forms such as Gond, Warli, Madhubani, Pithora, Cheriyal, Rogan, Kalamkari, Pichwai, Aipan, Rangwali Pichora, Kangra, Basholi, Mysore paintings, Bastar Dhokra, and Kachchhi embroidery.

Aligned with the Vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister
The initiative supports the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of promoting skill-based education and cultural entrepreneurship. By empowering tribal youth through artistic and vocational excellence, NESTS is nurturing future artist-entrepreneurs, enhancing heritage conservation and enabling income-generation opportunities.

Education for Empowerment and Inclusion
EMRS institutions are playing a transformational role in strengthening identity, confidence and national integration among tribal communities. By merging traditional knowledge with contemporary education, these schools help overcome historical disadvantages and create pathways to progress and dignity.

Public Participation and Exhibition
The event features a student art exhibition-cum-sale, live demonstrations, and interactive visitor participation. The exhibition is open to the general public daily from 09:30 AM to 04:00 PM and remains accessible until 26 November 2025, encouraging citizens, art lovers and researchers to support authentic tribal art.

Conclusion
The GI Tagged Tribal Art Workshop & Exhibition marks a significant step toward preserving indigenous artistic heritage while promoting sustainable development through education and innovation.
